Cuxhaven is a seaport town in Germany, belonging to the state of Niedersachsen, and situated at the extremity of the west side of the mouth of the Elbe,
71 miles by rail northwest of Hamburg. The Cuxhaven ferry port is an important trading link for Germany, with a passenger ferry connecting the port with
Harwich in the UK. Cuxhaven is one of the major fish industry locations in Europe. Well worth a visit are the fish mongers and restaurants in the
auction rooms and around the harbour, which offer fish straight off the boat. Cuxhaven city centre has a variety of interesting shops to choose from.
Danish ferry operator DFDS Seaways offers between three and four weekly sailings between Cuxhaven
and Harwich in England, with a journey time of 19 ½ hours. The ferries have extensive facilities onboard, including a pleasant outer-deck area, a number
of bars and cafés, a selection of different cabins and business amenities. These vessels can accommodate both passengers and vehicles.
Cuxhaven Ferry port Facilities:
The facilities at Cuxhaven port aren't extensive, though you will find a convenience store and a number of vending machines selling hot and cold
refreshments. Passengers with disabilities are advised to contact DFDS ferry operator prior to travel, if they have any special needs.
There are a number of cabins for those with disabilities, while the ferry terminal building is wheelchair accessible and has disabled toilets.
Getting to Cuxhaven ferry port by Car:
If Travelling from the North:
The following directions depend on where you will be travelling from:
A. If travelling from the Flensburg area, take the A7 south, take the exit signposted Hamburg/Heimfeld and turn into the Cuxhavener Strasse, which becomes the B73 and you will pass through the towns of Buxtehude and Stade. This road takes you all the way to Cuxhaven. At the first roundabout take the road signed England Ferry/Harwich. Follow the road for 2.3 km and turn into Lubbert Strasse where you will find the Hapag Halle / DFDS Seaways Terminal after approximately 1.7 km.
B. If Travelling from the direction of Lübeck, take the A1 until you reach the Bremer Kreuz (highway crossing at Bremen), then turn onto the A27 which
leads you directly to Cuxhaven. Follow directions as above.
C. Should you wish to cross the Elbe by ferry, via the A23 from the south, take the B431 at Elmshom in the direction of Glückestadt where you can
take the ferry to Wischafen. Ferries run every hour at an approximate cost of ?5.50 - ?8.50 per car and ?1.50 per person - subject to change.
From Wischafen, pass through the town of Balje until you join the B73. Following signs to Cuxhaven, follow directions as above.
If travelling from the South:
Follow signs onto either A1 or A7 until you reach the Bremer Kreuz, then follow signs onto the A27. Keep on this road which takes you all the way
to Cuxhaven, then follow directions as above.
Getting to Cuxhaven ferry port by Bus:
Customers should take the public bus from the railway station to the Cuxhaven ferry terminal. It takes approximately 10 minutes, and arrives in front of
the Cuxhaven ferry port and costs ?1.55 per person/one way
